I purchased one copy of this pamphlet, and immediately ordered more to give away as gifts and as holiday stocking stuffers. "Grubbycup's Simple Hydroponics" is a beginning primer on hydroponic growing, and very helpful to someone like me---a soil gardener who takes one look at technical books on hydroponic gardening and gets scared away by all the geeky the-speak. Color me right-brained: this 40 page booklet is chock full of easy-to-understand info for non-geeks.Written in everyday language your Aunt Ethyl and Uncle Fred can understand, Grubbycup breaks down topics carefully and simplifies all the technical information that has always made me shy away from even thinking about trying hydroponics in the past. This pamphlet makes it easy to understand the different types of hydro, and how to make it work on a limited budget without making a major investment.
It's FUN, too! There are some elegantly simple yet whimsical projects anyone can do for just pennies, to learn and understand the principles of hydroponic gardening. There's one really neat passive hydro project using an eggshell and crocheted holder that would be so much fun to do with children. This is such a delightfully accessible booklet, and could make for great rainy-day family projects.
One person in my life was an avid soil gardener until health concerns and strokes left him unable to work outside in his garden anymore. The projects in this booklet are ones he can do sitting in his lounge chair in front of the TV. He has some cognitive impairment now, and can't multitask very well. He needs clear, simple directions. Grubbycup's booklet is already on its way to him, and I know he will find it motivating and interesting, as well as easy-to-follow because it's filled with so many informative pictures, not heavy text.
"Grubbycup's Simple Hydroponics also outlines more advanced hydro systems, but the main thrust is for the beginner, the person a little hesitant to take that leap of faith and try hydroponic gardening. People like me, like my sisters, my girlfriends, my aunts and uncles and cousins who also love to grow flowers, fruits and vegetables. I am already growing windowsill herbs in perlite using the simple passive-hydroponic technique outlined in the booklet. They are thriving! I've added a picture of my windowsill mint in the Amazon "Customer images" gallery.
Because the booklet also covers environments, lighting, growing mediums, humidity, temperature, and areoponics, it's a book even the most rank beginner can follow with fast, tangible results. A few months ago I would have bet my disability check that I would never, never try hydroponics--it looked way too complicated, way too pricey, and soil was a sure thing I knew I could count on.
I'm so glad I took that "leap of faith." I no longer find hydroponics too complicated to understand. Your Aunt Ethyl and Uncle Fred won't, either.

Grubbycup Simple Hydroponics Grubbycup Stash 9780615453521 Books Reviews
I think what I am looking for is a step by step instructional guide for newbies. This is not it.
Good pictures, info. Good starter book. You need a real interest and desire to make this work, but a season's worth of veggies is great.
This is a fine book if you are just starting out. However, I felt there could have been a bit more information. It did give me enough information though to start a very successful tomatoe and pepper hydo garden, so that much is good. Content is easy to read, directions easy to follow.
Easy to read & understand; had some great ideas to build your own hydroponic set up. It could've been a bit more detailed regarding nutrients, pH, EC, ppms, etc., Still a good read though.
I purchased this looking for something that would give me the basics of hydroponics. I live in the North, and I just want information on how to grow some simple things through the winter in my house. I don't have a greenhouse, I don't have a ton of gardening knowledge, I just thought it might be something fun to play around with this winter. Well, the search is still on for a good, simple, basic book on hydroponics.
First of all, this was definitely more of a "booklet" than book. I don't think it even took 20 minutes to read from cover to cover. Basically it explains all the terms in hydroponics, the different types of systems, lights, etc. There was no specific "how-to" information, or any information on the best way to grow different types of plants. I did find some of the pictures helpful, and I at least have a general knowledge of the science behind hydroponics. Now I just need to find a book to tell me how to do it!
This is more a pamphlet than a book as it is thin. However it offers a basic intro into Hydroponics. It is okay, though basic it gives an easy to understand illustrated look at the basics of Hydroponic systems. The illustrations are quite good. I only gave it 4 stars primarily due to the fact that is a thin book with only basic information and little else.
I received Hydroponics Vol. 1 a while ago. I like the size, very convenient to carry around, and it is nicely illustrated. In a "how to" book I prefer that the author keeps things simple. I have read too many such books that were so full of warnings and precautions that I wondered how anything actually managed to grow. Right from the beginning there are tips on little things like keeping the planting area house and guest friendly. Practical advice about electrical cords preceeds the more in depth advice about the equipment needed, with recommendations according to budget. After that it is all about the plants. I learned something useful and interesting on every page. I felt that the author truly wanted to share his knowledge and came up with a book that did exactly that. From the Grubbycup name and the explanation for it, to the lovely cats on the back page, I can only say you will not be disappointed with the book or the person who wrote it.
